I used to wonder why I got so much resistance when I gave advice to my friends or tried to fix their problems. In fact, I noticed people started to go silent on me, to stop sharing with me what was happening in their lives. They even avoided me. I’ve been surprised, though, how much better my friendships are when I really listen. I guess I don’t have to be the great problem solver for people to like me; they just want friends who will listen. That’s what I want too. Anyway, it feels great to listen and connect without the pressure of trying to fix everything. It reminds me of going through the drive through or takeout when I’m asked to repeat my order to make sure they got it right.
